At the new W Dallas-Victory Hotel in Dallas, scheduled to open this week, the look is “cowboy cool.” Translation: Cowhide and ostrich — usually stretched into various shapes and mixed with the W’s clean, contemporary look. Everywhere, glass brings the city and the Texas sky inside.

I grew up around cattle, so hanging around their hides in Dallas doesn’t do much for me. I like my leather hairless. But I’m not a visitor to Texas, unlike many of the W’s potential guests.
